Can the Feldenkrais Method Help With Multiple Sclerosis? (article)
More easily move with less pain is on the top of the list for many people suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS). But if you've tried to find different exercises you could put more pressure on your body instead, you may want to consider the Feldenkrais method.Created by the late Russian-born physicist Moshe Feldenkrais, Feldenkrais method is based on the idea that people can learn how to move with less effort through the exercise of muscle movements minimum instead of stretching and straining. Method uses the brain's ability to change - known as neuroplasticity - in response to stimulation.
According to Feldenkrais educational institution in North America, and the method can help to increase the ease and range of motion, improve flexibility and coordination, and to enable a graceful, efficient movement, which can enhance performance in many aspects of your life.
Using the connection between the mind and body
Feldenkrais felt there was a direct relationship between the movement and how we think, feel, and act in the world, and focuses on the Feldenkrais method on the relationship between movement and thought.
"The Feldenkrais method leads to changes in the way we think and feel," as House Rubinstein, Feldenkrais trainer in Los Angeles specializing in MS says. "Instead of working on individual muscles, we work with the relationships with the different muscles, so, your mind responds to doing things in a new way."
While there has not been much research done on the effects of Feldenkrais on people who suffer from MS, a small study conducted in 2001 of 12 people with MS and showed that it can be effective in improving a variety of physical and psychological measures related to balance and postural control.
How is it that
Feldenkrais method can be practiced in two forms:
It is raising awareness through movement lessons to follow verbal instructions to perform a series of movements. Often these lessons take place in the ranks of the group, but you can also do them by following audio or video recording, or even by following the written instructions. Most of the lessons lie down, and a few are sitting or standing.
It involves the functional integration guided through the different movements by the Feldenkrais practitioner certified union. Overall, the student lies passively while the practitioner moves his limbs or other parts of the body. The physician may also be directed to the student to move in certain ways, and may be some parts of the session sitting, standing, or walking.
Both methods guide people through a series of movements and explorations based on sensation. By trying to keep the different currents, anyone who discovers that require less effort or movements caused less discomfort or pain. Much of this happens subconsciously.
Small changes, big effects
While the Feldenkrais movements are not like traditional and non-aerobic exercises, they can have similar effects on the body, such as increased production of synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant in the joints. Exercise can also Feldenkrais movements promote better circulation, improved respiratory function, improved coordination and balance.
It can also help to change the standard of the move or the body that contribute to the pain by providing the brain with alternatives ways of holding.
"Everyone has a learning ability of the body," says Rubinstein. "Those who have MS may have an interruption with one of the spaces in the nervous system, which prevents them from being able to do a certain movement, but through the Feldenkrais we know another way to do it."
For example, many people say with MS is trying to help her because she wants to be going better.
"But they only know how to walk in the way they walk. They had never thought about how they put their weight on their feet, so I could help them on their feet the whole feeling - or how it feels the whole body on their feet," says Rubinstein.
It's also a lot of people to see with MS who have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning because of the physical limitations of MS.
"Simple things, and I do not think you can help," says Rubinstein. "If you turn your head a certain way or your shoulder in a certain way or breathe in a certain way, it may make it easier to get up. For most people, when you can not do something, they try hard, but through Feldenkrais, we teach them to move as effortless as possible. it's not about slit through. through slow and gentle movements, people can be adjusted to recruit muscle fibers. "
From student to doctor
Susan Dillon, president of the Cambridge branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society in England, and the practice of Feldenkrais method shortly before the beginning she was diagnosed with MS.
"At 44, I was having trouble with my neck and reading, and began to limp," says Dillon. "I went from someone very athletic for not being able to walk 100 yards. Feldenkrais began attending the meetings and I felt better and better."
A year later, Dillon was diagnosed with MS. Shortly thereafter, she began training to become a Feldenkrais instructor.
"I realized how much better I felt when I was practicing on the way," she says. "There were moments when I have given up, but the Feldenkrais keeps me mobile. My husband and I hike, I really believe that do Feldenkrais makes it possible for me to do so. I do not know where I'd be without it."
Now 65, Dillon says the best way to explain how it helps the way is that it has taught her to recognize small differences in her body, which are signs of that when the emphasis is nervous apparatus.
"When I feel these differences, I make myself comfortable. Sometimes recovery a few days, and sometimes longer. I try to identify the smallest beginnings of the differences, and when I do that, it leads to less healing time," she says.
Improve without moving
Those practicing Feldenkrais method believe that with the passage of time, their awareness activist, an awareness of one's position in my body, weight, and motion, and it becomes clearer and allow them to feel the benefits of Feldenkrais during rest breaks without actually doing Feldenkrais exercises. In other words, just imagine the movement brings the same results as you do the movement.
Dillon can attest to this phenomenon.
"I do not do Feldenkrais every day, but I teach three classes a week, in each category, and I have to make sure I have planned her lessons. When I am teaching lessons, and visualize what I'm teaching the participants to do," she says. "I feel the benefits of the class after he knew that, although I do not actually do the movements."
And it suggests that scientists have found that for some movements, is activated by the same networks of neural pathways whether you actually move or just imagine moving.
"There was a US study that was a group of people go into a room with a piano," Dillon explains. "Some of the group practicing the piano, and the perception of some moving their fingers on the piano. A similar muscle development in those who did not exercise, and those who conceived it."
Try it
Find a certified Feldenkrais practitioner union in your area, and many of them offer classes as well as group and individual sessions, visit Feldenkrais.com. Feldenkrais books and presentations CD, visit the website of the Feldenkrais Institute, located in New York City.
Before signing on the class, contact a doctor or the studio where they are given lessons to learn whether it is likely to be appropriate for you. While the junior class level would be appropriate for most people, a class aimed at, for example, athletes or musicians may not be in.
According to Rubinstein, although the biggest challenge of the exercise method is that it is a different way of being.
"It's hard to move easier," she says. "People struggle to go to exercise class, they sweat, so they believe that his condition. We know moving in a comfortable way. Our whole society has a hard time slowing down and pay attention, sometimes even at the beginning, the people because they have to pay attention to how they are moving. But all the people with MS who have come to my class we saw quick results. "
