Learning the Signs of Lung Cancer - Discover The Truth (article)
Early signs of lung cancer are often difficult to detect. According to Melissa Conrad Stoppler, MD (Lung Cancer Signs and Symptoms) approximately 25% of patients have no symptoms upon diagnosis. Currently, the healthcare system is designed to react to patients experiencing symptoms. As a result almost 40 percent of small-cell lung cancers (SCLC)? are late stage diagnoses; in non small-cell (NSCLC), about 30% are found in advanced stages.Symptoms
A variety of signs may present as a result of SCLC or NSCLC. As cancerous cells continue to grow, a tumor can obstruct airways, blood vessels and major organs. Symptoms from coughing up bloody sputum to having difficulty breathing are common. Although indicative of many medical conditions, general fatigue and loss of appetite are also caused by this disease.
A person can differentiate between a normal coughing bout and one which indicates a problem. If a chronic cough persists or gets worse, cancer cells may be growing in the airways. When signs of blood are present, these cells may be rupturing and bleeding into the main bronchus. Hoarseness and wheezing can also indicate a problem.
When malignant cells have metastasized to the bone, brain or lymph nodes above the neck, symptoms become more painful and debilitating. Impaired brain function can affect vision and smell, and cause severe headaches or stroke. When lymph nodes above the collarbone are invaded, the patient may develop Pancoast's Syndrome, which causes radiating pain from the shoulder and down the arm, as well as a sensation of pins and needles in the hands.
Causes
Lung cancers are the most lethal to men and women on a global scale. Researchers claim 90 percent of cases can be attributed to cigarette smoking, but it is not the sole cause. Second-hand smoke from cigarettes contains just as many carcinogens as the first puff, increasing the risk for people with extended or frequent exposure.
Another common risk factor is exposure to radon gas. This gas occurs naturally from the breakdown of uranium in soil.? If you have had exposure to these or other environmental risk factors, learning about the signs to watch for can help catch and treat the disease early on.
